The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is the largest unsanctioned boat race in the United States and has been voted as the number 1 boat race/shootout in the Country by the Powerboat Magazine Readers for the last two years. It has also been listed by Powerboat Magazine as one of the 8 "must see" boating events. Official speeds at the New Captain Ron's course have hit 208 mph each of the last two years, with claims that these speeds may have reached an even higher number. New radar guns for 2012 may provide some validity to these claims.
The 23rd Anniversary issue of the Shootout was nothing short of spectacular as a newcomer to the Shootout, Bill Tomlinson, made 8 runs, six of which were on Sunday and hit the record tying speed of 208 on three different runs. Dave Scott watched from the comfort of his living room this year as his record held and set the stage for an electrifying matchup in 2012. However, there was alot more to the Shootout in 2011 as more than 100,000 people showed up for a number of events including the Treasure Hunt, Golf Tournament, 3 different Concerts, the Shootout on the Strip Street Party, a PWC Dam Run, an auction, Make-a-Wish Boat Rides, the Mini-Shootout, a remote controlled boat race, a fantastic poker run with several fun runs mixed in, a fantastic Fireworks display and of course an amazing weekend for boat racing.
As exciting as it was to watch these boats fly down the one mile course and seeing a Skater hit 191 mph and a Pontoon boat go 107 mph, the most rewarding part of the Shootout is being able to hand out checks to all the Fire Departments and the local Charities. In 2011, checks totalling $70,570.00, a new record, were handed out to 8 different Fire Departments and 12 additional charitible organizations. All of the events that have been added during Shootout week are designed to bring in additional monies for these charities; there's even a contest to see who has the cleanest boat. The Shootout continues to make a huge difference in the Lake Community.
The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Board and Committee is so thankful to all of the Sponsors and the 493 volunteers that donated 5727 hours to this event, helping to raise this kind of money for the Charities. We sincerely thank each and every one of them who continue to make this event such a huge success.
Bill Tomlinson and Ken Kehoe tied the Captain Ron's Course record with a blistering 208 mph TOP GUN speed at the 2011 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. "My Way" as the 2011 Turbine Powered Mystic is named, certainly showed the way as they thrilled the crowd with 8 runs, all over 200 mph
